As Costs Rise, Rashetta Reaches Out

Rashetta visits the food pantry at Belle Terrace Presbyterian Church. The skyrocketing cost of a trip to the grocery store is hitting local families hard, and many of our neighbors are visiting our partner food pantries for the first time. Rashetta heard about the food pantry at Belle Terrace Presbyterian Church from a neighbor. With grandchildren to feed and inflated prices putting essential food items out of reach, she decided to give the program a try. “This place really does help,” she said. “The food I got from the pantry will last us about three or four [...]

Free Groceries Help Rigoberto Make Ends Meet

Rigoberto waits outside Faith Outreach Church to receive groceries, including nutritious staples like milk, meat, and vegetables. Rigoberto waited outside as volunteers prepared carts full of groceries. It was a busy morning at Faith Outreach Church, which provides food and clothing to the Hephzibah community every Tuesday. With the cost of food surging higher, many families are struggling to put food on the table. “I just hope it gets to where we can deal with it, especially us folks on a fixed income,” said Rigoberto. He heard about the pantry from the VA. Since then, he has [...]

Food Lion Feeds Gives S.C. Pantry a Fresh New Look

Karla pushes a shopping cart full of fresh and non-perishable groceries. On a sunny fall morning, Karla and Lilliana visited Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Center in Gloverville, S.C. to pick up groceries and a fresh produce box. "The fresh fruits and vegetables are the best," said Karla. Lilliana added that she plans to make healthy smoothies with the produce. Like many families in our community, Karla and Lilliana have felt the impact of inflation at the gas station and the grocery store. Food pantries like Our Lady of the Valley are helping them keep quality [...]

Thank You for 1 Million Meals

Historical photo of Spooky founder Evelyn Browne and Golden Harvest founder Mike Firmin receiving a check for the food and funds drive. Our 30th anniversary It’s Spooky to Be Hungry® campaign had a big goal. We asked our community to link arms with us to raise $250,000, which equals 750,000 meals. Not only did you meet the goal, you exceeded it! Together, we raised over 1 million meals between monetary and food donations. We are humbled and grateful for all of the individuals, teams, corporations, neighborhoods, schools, and our community as a whole for helping us break [...]

Building Capacity for Those We Serve

Special Projects Manager Glenn Tomlinson and CEO Amy Breitmann look over building plans. The Augusta warehouse will feature more workspaces and a new volunteer center. Things are changing at Golden Harvest Food Bank’s Augusta warehouse, and we are excited to share the news! Construction crews, stacks of hardware items, and a wired fence have become the visual norm at the location on Commerce Drive, which could only mean one thing: our Phase 1 Renovation Project is well underway. When we identified the 8.8 million meal gap across our service area, we knew what had to be done [...]

How You Helped a Local Veteran Enjoy Fresh Produce

Woodrow smiles as fresh vegetables are loaded into his truck. He was excited to use the cabbage, potatoes, and onions in healthy recipes. As volunteers loaded fresh cabbage, onions, and potatoes into his truck, Woodrow could see plenty of possibilities.  “You’d be surprised how many different ways you can cook a potato. You can do so much with a cabbage, and onions,” he said. “I like to eat an onion sandwich. That’s bread and mayonnaise and sliced onions.”  For a distribution scheduled to begin promptly at 5:30 p.m., people arrived as early as noon. Woodrow was one [...]

Thank You For 2022

Dear Friends, John receives a turkey for his family's holiday meal at a Mobile Market distribution.  During our first Golden Harvest Staff meeting in January of 2022, I shared the following scripture verse and these words:  “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.” - Matthew 7:24 I shared that our [...]

The Truth About Food Insecurity: Thanks for Giving

Volunteers load fresh produce into the car of a family in need at a Mobile Market food distribution Two little boys poked their heads out of a car window and smiled at me. I was standing in the Augusta campus food bank parking lot, and cars in line for food snaked along for as far as I could see. Yet they were smiling. I approached them and smiled back. I pushed back tears as two volunteers loaded boxes and bags of fresh food into their trunk. As their faded white car slowly drove away, one small toddler [...]

Building a Fresher Future

GHFB President and CEO Amy Breitmann is joined by board members, CFS Architects staff, and builder, Todd Brown during our July 29th groundbreaking ceremony. If you’ve been by the Golden Harvest Food Bank Augusta warehouse, you may have noticed a few different things: a new sign and a construction crew.  With the launch of our new branding a few months ago, we are currently in the process of giving our old buildings and facilities a face-lift to fully meet the needs of those we serve in our 25-county area.  Last year, we identified an 8.8 million meal [...]
