AUGUSTA (08/12/2025) For 33 years, neighborhoods, businesses, organizations, and volunteers have joined forces with Golden Harvest Food Bank to scare away hunger through the It’s Spooky to Be Hungry® Drive. As the Food Bank prepares for this year’s campaign, the organization is seeking new Spooky captains in Richmond, Columbia, and Aiken counties to help lead their communities in the fight against hunger.
The It’s Spooky to Be Hungry® drive unites neighbors, co-workers, schools, and local businesses to collectively “scare away hunger.” Spooky captains are at the heart of the effort, encouraging friendly competition, inspiring generosity, and finding creative ways to raise funds and awareness. With food insecurity at its highest level in 15 years and one in four children at risk of hunger, strong community leadership is more important than ever.
Launched in 1992, It’s Spooky to Be Hungry® was created as a fun, impactful way for people of all ages to work together to fight hunger. Today, nearly 100 neighborhoods and dozens of businesses participate each year, making it one of the nation’s most successful grassroots hunger relief campaigns.
Last year’s campaign launched just days after Hurricane Helene struck the region, leaving many families facing sudden and significant loss. Even in the midst of recovery efforts, the community rallied to raise more than $300,000, providing hundreds of thousands of meals for neighbors in need. This year, Golden Harvest Food Bank is building on that resilience, aiming to raise more than $400,000 to help ensure no one across the 24 counties it serves has to wonder where their next meal will come from.
