Volunteers are all set up and ready to serve at the Vineyard Storehouse Food Pantry. Week after week, these dedicated faces show up ready to welcome neighbors, pack bags, and ensure that everyone who walks through the door leaves with the food they need.

For more than 20 years, the Vineyard Church of Augusta’s food pantry has been a place where families can find food, care, and compassion. Today, that mission is especially clear in the way the pantry serves children, making sure even the youngest guests feel welcomed, valued, and seen.

Patty, the pantry’s Volunteer Coordinator, began serving during the pandemic, when many families were stretched thin and living paycheck  to paycheck. What began as a time of urgent need became a calling. After 30 years in the community, Patty found purpose in helping create a space where families, especially those with children, are met with dignity and respect.

The pantry, led in outreach by Mary Margaret, focuses on healthy food and dignified service. That vision helped shape it into a choice pantry, where guests can select the foods their families will use and enjoy. For children, that choice matters. Many walk through with their parents and light up when they see snacks and familiar items chosen with them in mind. “Regardless of a child’s age, they are treated like a valued customer,” Patty shared. “We want them to feel seen.”

Service starts young at the Vineyard Storehouse Food Pantry. Children roll up their sleeves alongside their parents, learning firsthand what it means to show up for their neighbors.

Each time the pantry opens, it serves an average of 150 households, including many children and seniors. As more families seek support, the pantry has created small touches that make a big difference, like a kids table with books and toys where children can feel included while their parents shop. These intentional details help create a sense of normalcy and comfort, turning what could be a difficult moment into one that feels welcoming and familiar.

At Vineyard Church of Augusta, every detail reflects a simple message of care. “We use food as a vehicle, not the product,” Patty said. “The product is the love of God.” Through every snack, smile, and small act of kindness, children and families are reminded they are not alone.
