The It’s Spooky to Be Hungry® campaign broke all records this year, collecting more than 35,000 pounds of food and raising enough funds for almost 692,000 meals — all thanks to our community.

October 2020 marked the 28th year for Golden Harvest’s annual It’s Spooky To Be Hungry® campaign, and it turned out to be a year like no other.

It’s Spooky To Be Hungry® is one of the oldest grassroots food and funds drives in the country, but like so many things in 2020, it had to be re-imagined to help keep our community safe. That meant moving the food drive into the virtual space.

Businesses, neighborhoods, groups and community members that have traditionally collected food instead threw their passion for helping others into our new It’s Spooky To Be Hungry® virtual food drive.

More 30 CSRA businesses and 60 neighborhoods joined forces to scare away hunger through the virtual drive. Add in some friendly competition, and it was a recipe for success.

During this record-breaking campaign, It’s Spooky To Be Hungry® raised more food and funds than ever before in its 28-year history.

With your help, we raised funds for 691,600 meals for local families in need as well as collecting 35,000 pounds of food donations.

And we did it under less-than-ideal conditions and operating in new ways and because of you — your heart, generosity and dedication to feeding lives together.

With food insecurity in our service area up 22% during the pandemic, we are truly grateful for what our community was able to do by linking arms through this campaign. Thank you so much for your incredible support and participation.

We also offer a very special thanks to our event sponsor, Murphy Auto Group, and to our overall winners:

Business Winners: Savannah River Nuclear Lab, Tax Slayer, and Seiglers Karate Center

Neighborhood Winners: Cedar Creek, Woodside Plantation, Champions Retreat, and Stratford

Youth Partners: Jessye Norman School of Arts and Youth Leadership Columbia County
