Shellah and DaMonda picked up food and diapers for their children at GAP Ministries, a partner agency in Downtown Augusta.

With grocery bills skyrocketing, Augusta mom DaMonda knew where to find relief.

GAP Ministries opens its doors every Thursday morning, providing a food pantry and other vital resources for the Downtown Augusta community.

DaMonda, who had picked up groceries from GAP a few times before, brought her friend and first-time guest Shellah.

“GAP Ministries is very, very helpful, especially with what’s going on right now,” said DaMonda, after shopping in the pantry. “Everything in the economy has gone up. It’s hard, especially when you have small children.”

Grocery inflation is hitting families, seniors, and neighbors hard. Our more than 350 partner agencies and programs across the CSRA are serving more guests, many of whom are first-time visitors.

For families with children, getting enough nutritious food will be even more difficult in the coming months.

When schools close for the summer, school meal programs will close too — and many families struggle to afford the extra groceries.

This year, inflated food costs will be an added challenge.

1 in 5 children in our 25-county service area are experiencing food insecurity. Your support helps fill the gaps for children and families during the summer.

At GAP Ministries, DaMonda and Shellah chatted with the friendly volunteers. The pantry provides enough food for several days.

The two mothers received meat, dairy, cereal, fresh bananas and potatoes, bread, canned and shelf-stable goods, and diapers for their families.

“It brightened my day up. I’m happy,” said Shellah.

“I feel good about being able to make food stretch for my kids,” said DaMonda.
