Woodrow smiles as fresh vegetables are loaded into his truck. He was excited to use the cabbage, potatoes, and onions in healthy recipes.

As volunteers loaded fresh cabbage, onions, and potatoes into his truck, Woodrow could see plenty of possibilities.

“You’d be surprised how many different ways you can cook a potato. You can do so much with a cabbage, and onions,” he said. “I like to eat an onion sandwich. That’s bread and mayonnaise and sliced onions.”

For a distribution scheduled to begin promptly at 5:30 p.m., people arrived as early as noon. Woodrow was one of hundreds of our neighbors who waited in a long line to receive fresh vegetables.

During the fall, we hosted several fresh produce distributions to supplement the food that our over 350 partner agencies and programs provide for the community.

We have seen a rise in hunger in our 25 counties as inflated gas and grocery prices have caused many families to seek food assistance for the first time. Compared to last year, we are serving 39% more people across the CSRA.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are important for a healthy lifestyle, but eating nutritious food is a luxury many in our community can’t afford. 85% of those we serve report purchasing unhealthy, inexpensive food to make ends meet.

As we put more fresh produce into the hands of our neighbors, we are building a healthier future for our community.

Woodrow was all smiles when he pulled up to our Faith Food Factory, where local NJROTC students packed his truck full of fresh food. With four grandkids at home, he was excited to pick up healthy ingredients for his kitchen.

A Vietnam veteran, Woodrow has seen his share of hardships. But he shared his positive outlook with us before heading home.

“Life is great. I’ve been blessed by the Lord to keep me healthy,” he said.
