At ACTS of Aiken (Area Churches Together Serving), compassion looks like action. For 39 years, this network of more than 70 churches has been a cornerstone of care, meeting essential needs through food, clothing, transportation, and emergency assistance. But when the government shutdown disrupted SNAP benefits this fall, ACTS faced a new challenge as families who had never needed help before were suddenly at their door.

ā€œWe started getting calls and emails even before the shutdown began,ā€ said Logan Ford, Executive Director of ACTS. ā€œPeople were scared. They were trying to plan ahead, figuring out how to pay bills and feed their families.ā€

In response, the team quickly launched a supplemental emergency food program, adding walk-in services to their already full schedule of daily appointments. What began as 14 families a day soon grew to nearly 30, with word spreading across Aiken County that help was available. The phones rang nonstop; volunteers filled extra shifts, and donations poured in Left to Right: Debbie Johnson (Volunteer), Logan Ford (Director of ACTS), Linda McCollum (Volunteer) ā€œWe’re not just handing out food, we’re giving hope.ā€ as the community rallied around their mission.

ā€œWe’re seeing people from all walks of life,ā€ Logan shared. ā€œSome who used to donate their time and funds here are now the ones needing food. But God always provides through our volunteers, donors, and community partners like Golden Harvest.ā€ The Food Bank has remained a key ally throughout the crisis, helping ACTS stock shelves with essential items and stretch every dollar further. Volunteers continue packing bags, stocking shelves, and welcoming every neighbor with dignity and respect.

ā€œAs the holidays approach, it can feel heavy,ā€ Logan said. ā€œBut we remind each other that we’re not just handing out food, we’re giving hope. We’re neighbors serving neighbors.ā€ In a season shadowed by uncertainty, ACTS is proof that when compassion leads, light follows.
