Nestled within the vibrant JAM Student Activity Center at East Georgia State College (EGSC) is a remarkable resource known as the Bobcat Pantry. This vital initiative serves as a beacon of hope and support for many students on campus, ensuring that no one has to choose between their education and their next meal. The Bobcat Pantry is Golden Harvest Food Bank’s first college pantry partner, providing students with personal care needs and food assistance through a collaborative effort.

“The students enjoy it. The faculty and staff who utilize it also enjoy it, and it’s just been a great resource here at East Georgia State College,” said Roosevelt Young, Student Life Specialist at EGSC. “I’m big on making sure our students can succeed, not just in academics, and it’s really exciting to know that our students are utilizing the pantry.”

Operating with discretion and compassion, the pantry

provides critical support for students in need, ensuring they can receive the assistance they require with dignity. Johnna Eaton, Interim Dean of Students, hopes the Bobcat Pantry can be seen as a welcoming space where students can freely utilize the resources to get food essentials to help them get by both during the week and on the weekends when students are unable to use their meal plans. “We have a QR code that students can scan that sends a direct email to us with their needs so we can respond to them even when the pantry is closed,” said Johnna.

The dedication and commitment of Roosevelt, Johnna, and all the partners at EGSC to student well-being and eliminating hunger are truly commendable. The Bobcat Pantry stands as a shining example of how institutions can proactively support their students and ensure they have the resources they need to thrive.
