When it comes to child food insecurity, every family’s story looks different. In many homes, the people stepping in are not parents, but grandparents doing all they can to provide stability, comfort, and full plates.

Darlene is one of those grandparents. Now retired and living on a fixed income, she has spent the past nine months raising her two grandsons, ages 15 and 16. Feeding two growing teenagers is no small task, and like so many across our communities, Darlene is doing everything she can to make sure her family has what they need.

To help make ends meet, Darlene visits Barnwell-Bamberg Baptist Association, one of Golden Harvest Food Bank’s hunger relief partners. The food she receives does more than stretch her budget. It helps ensure her grandsons have consistent, reliable meals during the school week and at home. “Coming to these food distributions helps a lot,” Darlene shared. “They help supplement the food that I can’t afford to go out in the stores and buy. It’s helping out a lot.”

She also spoke to the dignity and care she feels each time she visits. “They are wonderful. Been a blessing coming here, too,” she said. “They’ve always been nice and courteous, and always pleasant to be here.”

At home, those groceries mean more than stocked shelves. They mean her grandsons have simple, accessible food they can prepare on their own, even on the hardest days. “They’re very excited,” Darlene said. “It’s stuff they can get and eat that they don’t have to cook.”

Darlene’s story is a powerful reminder that hunger can touch any household, often quietly and without warning. And it shows what is possible when a community comes together for their neighbors. For grandparents like Darlene, that support helps ensure love, sacrifice, and determination are met with the nourishment their families need.
