Senior Food Box
Golden Harvest provides at-risk seniors living on a fixed income with a free 18-20 pound box of groceries each month. Last year we distributed monthly groceries to over 1,000 seniors each month.
Adequate nutrition is very important for Senior Citizens to ensure active, healthy lifestyles. Unfortunately, many seniors are forced to make difficult, but unavoidable choices such as whether to purchase medication, pay for housing and/or utilities. Buying food, especially nutritious food, is often last on their list.
How you can Help
The past few years have seen an increase in the cost of food and transportation, causing a budget crunch that threatens a third of the people currently served by the Senior Food Box Program. With the increased life span and population of Senior Citizens, our numbers and waiting lists have grown. We need help from members of our community, businesses, and groups to keep the program sustainable. You can sponsor a senior in the program for only $15/month right here on our website!
More about this program
For over twenty years, Golden Harvest Food Bank has addressed the needs of hungry seniors through our Senior Food Box Program. We partner with non-profit organizations and government agencies to identify the most-needy seniors and to provide them supplemental food at the end of each month. Due to a network of product donors and an army of volunteers who believe in our mission, Golden Harvest is able to multiply money invested in the program and get needed food right into the hands of the seniors who need it most.
The Seniors We Serve
In the 30-county area served by Golden Harvest, 12.7% of seniors live below the poverty level. In Jefferson, Johnson, and Lincoln counties, that statistic skyrockets to 29%. The median per capita annual income for seniors enrolled in the Senior Food Box Program is just $8,328. They have just $694.00 a month to purchase everything necessary to sustain life.
